FETAL BOVINE SERUM HANDLING
STORAGE AND SHELF LIFE
Store all fetal bovine serum products at -20°C or below, unless otherwise
indicated on the label. Stability studies have shown that serum
products may be stored for up to five years under these conditions
with little or no detrimental effect. Do not use a frost free or
deicing type of freezer. Each product is labeled with storage instructions.
THAWING TO ALIQUOT
Thaw fetal bovine serum products rapidly. A 37°C water bath is preferred.
Glass bottles should be allowed to stay at room temperature for
an hour before being placed in the water bath to avoid breakage.
Do not repeatedly freeze and thaw bovine serum products. This will allow
degradation of the numerous active components of the serum. Occasionally
lipid and or calcium particulates may appear in the serum. This
does not indicate a problem with sterility or serum performance.
It is recommended to aliquot the serum into sterile containers (suitable
for freezing) and refreeze.
